Swing Bed Program

Jeff Davis Hospital has a Swing Bed Program to accommodate patients who've had surgery or medical conditions that require extended hospital stays with skilled nursing care and/or physical rehabilitation.

The purpose of this service is to "swing" patients from post-operative and acute care to skilled nursing care and physical rehabilitation.

Services

Providing recovery planning after a surgery, illness, or injury, such as (but not limited to):

hip/knee surgery
stroke
serious car accident
heart surgery
complex wound
new amputation
new colostomy
pneumonia/pulmonary disease

How do I qualify for this program?

Swing Bed patients can transfer from larger facilities where they've had surgery or care but are on the road to recovery. Even if a major surgery wasn't performed locally, patients can still be transferred home to Jeff Davis Hospital for rehabilitation, which may be more convenient for family and loved ones and more conducive to healing.

You're already an inpatient at Jeff Davis Hospital but require skilled rehabilitation before returning home. For your convenience, this federally-approved program allows small hospitals, like us, to use regular patient rooms to provide this care. Now you can stay in the same bed but receive your rehabilitation treatment from skilled nurses right here in the hospital.

What types of rehabilitation can be provided?

Some of the rehabilitation services which may require a Swing Bed include physical therapy, IV therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or skin and wound care.

Dr. Jason Laney is the Medical Director for our Swing Bed Program. Even if your physician isn't local, Dr. Laney will oversee your services. He'll collaborate with the skilled nursing team to develop a plan of care with the goal being a successfully rehabilitated discharge.

Your skilled nursing team will include:

You and your family
Physician
Nurses
Social services
Dietitian
Physical, occupational and speech therapist
Respiratory therapist
Wound care nurse

During your Swing Bed stay, you will have an opportunity to participate in various social activities, and we certainly welcome your suggestions for activities you might enjoy. Also, we can schedule time for your dog to visit upon approval and after providing proof of current vaccination records.
